The building forms part of a mixed-use residential complex in Brussels, comprising numerous residential units as well as social and religious facilities. As part of the modernisation of the heating supply, Hoval implemented a hybrid system concept that intelligently combines heat pump technology with condensing boiler technology.
Make use of existing infrastructure, reduce reliance on fossil fuels
The project serves as a prime example of how existing buildings with radiator systems can be modernised economically and adapted to meet the requirements of an increasingly renewable energy supply.
A smart combination of a heat pump and condensing boiler technology
The new heating supply combines heat pump technology and condensing boiler technology to form a high-performance integrated system. At the heart of the system are a Hoval Belaria pro (50) air/water heat pump and a Hoval UltraGas 2 D gas condensing boiler with an output of 250 kW (2 × 125 kW). The system is complemented by a Hoval EnerVal (1000) buffer storage tank and the Hoval TopTronic E system control unit and includes integration into the building management system.
The modulating heat pump accounts for the majority of annual heat generation. The dual-condensing boiler is only switched on when there is an increased demand for heat (peak loads) or when outside temperatures are low. This makes it possible to significantly reduce the use of fossil fuels, whilst maintaining comfort and security of supply.
Thanks to flow temperatures of up to 70 °C, the Belaria pro (50), which runs on natural refrigerant R290, can supply the existing radiator system. As a result, extensive adjustments to the heat distribution system were not required, and the cost of the modernisation was significantly reduced. Furthermore, the Belaria pro impresses with its quiet operation – an additional advantage for use in residential construction.
The natural gas-fired UltraGas 2 D, featuring two independently operating gas condensing boilers and a shared flue gas line for heating and domestic hot water production, ensures additional operational reliability and high system availability. The twin-boiler design allows for flexible heat output and guarantees a reliable heat supply even during maintenance work or in the event of a fault.
